Past, Present, Future: A Quick Reading

This three-card layout, or spread of cards, reveals three key issues or events. If you’re reading for yourself, the cards will tell you what to pay attention to right now. The cards offer a flash of insight into your situation or your client’s (so if your client does not wish to tell you why they have come for a reading, the cards will tell you). For more detail, you can progress to thirteen cards (see here).

There are two methods for selecting the three cards you’ll need for this reading.

Method one: Shuffle your deck, thinking of your question or asking, “What do I need to know now?” and place it on a table, facedown. Cut it twice, using your left hand, so you have three piles of cards. Turn each pile over side to side, so you’re looking at the card that was on the bottom of each pile. (You turn the piles over sideways to preserve the cards’ upright or reversed position because upright and reversed cards have different meanings.)

Method two: Shuffle the cards and deal seven from the top of the pile, laying them in a row from left to right. Select the first, fourth, and seventh cards and discard the remaining ones.

You can interpret your three chosen cards as past, present, and future, or as aspects of your current situation.

Past, present, future: For a past, present, future reading, the card to the left is the past, the center card is the present, and the card to the right is future influences and possibilities.

Three aspects of now: To read the cards as three aspects of your current situation, look at their values. The card with the highest value (taking Ace as high) reveals the most important aspect now. For example, if you had the Seven of Hearts, Ace of Diamonds, and King of Clubs, you would take the Ace as the key focus. The Ace of Diamonds means an important document or letter. A basic interpretation would be the news or information you receive is about love or from someone who loves you (Seven of Hearts); the King of Clubs—a supportive, dark-haired man—may be that person. As the reading is about the present, rather than the future, it is likely that you will already know this individual.

Variation: You can allocate the meanings of three cards any way you wish. And if you prefer, you can choose three cards at random from the deck, facedown, rather than cards 1, 4, and 7.
